Woman Receives Free Eye Surgery After Hearing VOA Program

Following a South Sudan in Focus broadcast about a local foundation providing free eye surgeries in Juba, Margaret Wakasa, who has suffered from cataracts, was able to improve her vision. “When I was sitting in the house I put on the Voice of America; so when I listened to it, they announced very well that it was going to take place,” Wakasa told VOA while at the hospital. The surgeries, part of an annual initiative by the Dr. Phillips Tongun Foundation, commemorate the legacy of the late South Sudanese doctor.

VOA Leads as the Go-To Source for News, Analysis on ASEAN, G20 Summits

EAP services provided timely, in-depth and original multi-media coverage of the meetings. VOA Khmer’s reporting on the ASEAN summit in Cambodia, including President Biden’s meeting on the sidelines with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, scored big – with nearly a million views for one video report alone. EAP’s G20 coverage got off to a strong start even before the annual talks formally began. VOA Indonesian’s Instagram video highlight garnered 80,000 views, while VOA Mandarin’s reporting on Biden’s pre-summit meeting in Bali with China’s Xi Jinping generated nearly one million views.

VOA Persian’s Election Special Generates Strong Audience Interest

VOA Persian aired a 5-hour live Election Special, hosted by Siamak Dehghanpour, with 20+ high-profile guests from twelve cities and live remotes by seven reporters. The program was also live streamed on five digital platforms. Farhad Pouladi reported from the White House, Amir Giti from Los Angeles, Kambiz Tavana and Shahla Arasteh covered the Senate and the House of Representatives. The National Iranian American Council Jamal Abdi‘s interview garnered 1.7 million views on social media. The special covered numerous aspects of the election, especially the impact on U.S. policy towards Iran and received more than 2.4 million views on all digital platforms.

VOA Spanish Election Coverage Attracts Large Audiences, Sets Records with Affiliates

Comprehensive election day and post-election coverage generated more than 375K views across digital platforms, and 118K views on YouTube. Correspondents delivered on a record 256 election day affiliate requests, with Guatemala’s Guatevisión incorporating VOA reporting in three shows, including a primetime newscast which, according to news director Antonio Izcot, was instrumental for its audience “to get a better understanding of American politics.” Reporters did Facebook lives from Miami, and New York and participated in a late-night Facebook Live recap special, generating more than 12K views. In addition, VOA Spanish collaborated with Central News, producing original digital content, such as Celia Mendoza’s English-language report on @voanews Instagram account.

Millions Across Eurasia Turn to VOA for Coverage of the Critical U.S. Midterm Elections

VOA was the source of credible information for our Eurasian audience about the U.S. midterm elections and of statements from lawmakers and experts that explained the political positions of the two major parties in the U.S. VOA Eurasia division journalists were present in nearly all nationally televised newscasts and special programming on America’s congressional elections in Albania, Armenia, Bosnia, Georgia, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine in more than 70 interactives with affiliates, reporting live from Atlanta, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, NYC, Miami, Arlington, Virginia, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. VOA Russian’s three-hour television special and VOA Ukrainian’s two-hour special were live on the services’ social media platforms. VOA Russian’s special program was carried by Current Time and VOA Ukrainian’s was re-streamed online by eight channels in Ukraine. In addition to up-to-date election results, live blogs, explainers and infographics, analysis was provided by experts on the elections’ impact on foreign relations, domestic issues, the economy and diaspora reaction, as well as on malign foreign influence in the 2022 U.S. midterms.

Audiences Engage with VOA on U.S. Election Results Coverage

Audiences coming to VOA for U.S. midterm election coverage seemed most interested in the final results. Katherine Gypson’s TV story stating the balance of power between Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. Congress was still undecided got more than 167K views on YouTube. A web story about the U.S. Senate race tightening in Nevada and Arizona garnered 14,482 views on voanews.com, while a piece on the still unresolved House of Representatives race attracted 4,860 views on the English website. The News Center produced more than three dozen web articles and TV packages related to the November 8 midterms for language services and voanews.com.

Media Outlets in Pakistan and Turkey Rely on VOA for Coverage of U.S. Midterm Elections

VOA Urdu reporters were on the ground throughout the United States to report on the major contests and the potential impact of the election results on Muslim communities in America for local media outlets in Pakistan. “We are very happy to cooperate with VOA Turkish again because of the midterm elections in the US,” said Suheyla Demir, the head of foreign news desk at Haber Global channel, one of numerous TV channels in Turkey which relied on VOA Turkish for the coverage of midterm elections.
