By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE) said on Thursday that in collaboration with the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) it had signed the Country Programming Framework (CPF) 2022 – 2026.

“This strategic document presents the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) key areas of technical cooperation, and medium-term country-level programming in support of the Government of Belize,” said MAFSE.

The CPF 2022-20226 was signed by Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai and FAO Representative for Jamaica, the Bahamas, and Belize Dr. Crispim Morreira in the presence of, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Belize and El Salvador Birgit Gerstenberg, Strategic Planning officer Tracey Hutchinson and other MAFSE senior staff.

According to the Ministry, the Country Programming Framework was developed within the framework of the United Nations programming processes. MAFSE said the CPF is in line with Plan Belize, and COVID-19 Economy Recovery Strategy which emphasizes agriculture, food and nutritional security, and rural development.

“The CPF 2022 – 2026 sets out the lines of cooperation that FAO will provide over the next four years and is aimed at advancing Belize’s national development priorities within three strategic areas of work,” said MAFSE.

Three strategic areas are covered in the framework. These are inclusive food systems for the eradication of malnutrition and food insecurity, sustainable and inclusive agri-food systems, agricultural value chains, and resilience to climate and economic shocks through sustainable natural resources management.

The program aims at strengthening the capacity of government stakeholders such as extension officers to support farmers to supply local markets and social protection programs such as the school feeding program.

The focus is to ensure safe and nutritious foods for all, end hunger and all forms of malnutrition, and to reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases by improving institutional capacities to enhance nutrition awareness.

The Strategic Areas of Work should benefit from the best practices developed by FAO at the national, regional, and from international technical standards promoted by FAO in its member countries.
