Director of Programming and Artist Development | Barnsley Civic

The Director of Programming and Artist Development is an exciting new post which replaces the previous two programming positions, managing the performance programme, artist development and the visual art gallery.

The new Director will ensure that there is a coherent, innovative, and exciting programme of work presented by Barnsley Civic in its theatre, gallery, outdoors, and other spaces and across the engagement programme.

The Director of Programming and Artist Development will be expected to develop a new artistic strategy
for Barnsley Civic, which will be responsive, engaging, entertaining and vital for the people we serve. It will be diverse in its DNA, providing a platform for artists across protected characteristics and social-economic backgrounds. We intend to make interventions into this by focusing our commissions and producing with artists and companies who are from the global majority, LGBTQIA+, D/deaf, disabled, neurodiverse or a challenged socio-economic group. This will accelerate the diversity of work delivered by Barnsley Civic.

The new artistic programme will have an increased focus on the under-30s audience by providing more music of all kinds popular with young people. This will be supported by a new £6 ticket for those under-30s.  The programme will resonate with the people of our town and borough and be built in collaboration with the Senior Leadership Team, in particular the Director of Communications and Development and the CEO.

It is expected that the Director of Programming and Artist Development will deliver work which engages with more people and encourages return visits and inspires and excites current audiences, new audiences and those who aspire to become artists and support them on their journey.
